I did a shot a couple months ago of my Sister’s family, it was experimental but still came out pretty cool. I had posted it on Facebook and my friend Dianna commented that she wanted one for her family. The trick is her family is 10 people large! I figured it would be fabulous to have a gigantic 5 or so foot image running down the wall somewhere in there house with all their smiling faces so I took them up on the offer.

The shoot went flawlessly and the final came out beautifully. All we need to do is get it printed up!

The Pereas

I had the privilege of doing a Family Photography shoot here in San Diego last Saturday with some old friends. I like to do shoots with people in places they love and the Pereas picked Normal Heights. It’s a fun eclectic neighborhood and they happen to live within walking distance. The weather was beautiful and we used a lot of natural light with flash fills. Please do let me know what you think!

Powell O Rama

In an effort to develop my Rockstar Family Photography idea I recruited some rockstar friends for a photo shoot. We scheduled it a week out and when the day of the shoot came around (March 6th) it was nasty and stormy. Seriously what the heck, this is San Diego??? I got in touch with them that morning and tried to call the shoot off, they informed me that they still wanted to do it and Adam offered to bring me a sweater if I was going to be a wuss. Naturally it was game on! I grabbed a fellow strobist, Matt Jones, to help and we headed to the shoot.

We had planned to do the shoot in areas of SD that they were particularly fond of and I had scouted out some great spots earlier in the week. We met up and to our surprise the area was dry and we only had mildly stormy looking skies. As we set up for the first scene the wind kicked up and promptly blew in some rain. We nailed down a few shots and moved to the second location on the other side of the building. This worked great for Adam and Chelsea as they were in an arch way protected from the elements. Matt and Myself, not so much… When I bought by camera bag I noted that it had a sewn in rain flap that hid away in a velcro pouch. I figured I would NEVER use it here in San Diego. Turns out it works very well!

By the time we were done shooting that spot it was raining so hard we ended up just getting coffee and waiting for a bit. Once it cleared we grabbed a few more shots in the area then it was on to this awesome little trashed “neighborhood” (4 houses) that happened to be accessible to us (we know the property owners). We got there in the dark and decided to clear out the houses before we turned our backs to them for the shoot. To our pleasant surprise we only found one crazy tweaker who tried to kick us out. We informed him that we were allowed to be there and he jumped the fence and took off. He came back once we were done and the police were called. He ended up in the psyke ward for an evaluation.

The shoot was a lot of fun and my toes are almost thawed out a week of so later. I learned a lot about technique and shooting in adverse situations. The pictures came out fabulously so be sure to check out the whole set on Flickr.

The Burmeisters

We took some food over to the Burmeisters house this evening. Dinner was fabulous and the kiddo was in top form letting us all check him out. He even posed for some fun pictures. I didn’t capture a “Magic” shot of the whole family but hey, I’m still learning, it was fun playing with some lights

Bohemian Ealsons

I had this fancy little idea to to do a pseudo Bohemian Rhapsody shot of my sister’s fam. I figured I could just take the pics one at a time and photoshop them all together. (way easier then trying to get a 5, 4 and 1 year old to hold still and make appropriate faces.) I didn’t think it through too well and lit them all with the same hard Rembrant lighting to achieve the fading to black effect. When I got down to editing I realized the lighting was totally wrong for what I wanted to do. I scrapped that Idea and went with something a little different.

The Molinas

Some long time friends came up yesterday for a BBQ, hanging out and Photo Shoot. We wandered over to Indian Hills Camp, which adjoins our property, and took some fun pseudo western pictures. This literally was my first photo shoot with a family, or people for that matter, so I was excited and hoping they would turn our great. I said something like “If I can get 5 good shots from this I’ll be happy.”, luckily I got more. I was shooting on Manual and experimented with an off camera flash a bit so I wasn’t working too fast. I was out of my comfort zone so I was glad to have some good friends that knew what I was all about and forgiving.

The shoot was fun, hanging out was great and the massive amounts of Tri Tip and Deer (that Tony shot) were fabulous!
